Hugo Ortega growing Australia one UMPC at a time!

Dear Readers,

(How are you all?!?!)

It may please you all to know that I am still here, have lost none of my PASSION for UMPC and Tablet PC, and more specifically am missing you all more than ever.

It seems in the past three years I have burnt the candle at both ends and as a result have had to suffer the loss of the BLOG...or better said, the maintenance there of. While my thoughts are with all of you daily it is unrealistic for me to think I can balance a successful business, family and the UberTablet family without growing supernatural powers. It would be disrespectful to you to assume that I can, and is creating a feeling of disappointment in myself.

So here is my promise. If you can bear with the limited publications I can provide at this period what I promise is to bring you the best of me as often as I possibly can. I admire the perseverance of some of you for emailing me constantly and am humbled by that support. I promise I am with you with the same passion and smile.

The past 18-months have been particularly good to me. The UMPC and Tablet PC Wholesale Organisation I run has grown over 400% (Tegatech Australia) and I was blessed enough to travel with my wife and two children for three months (including Paris, Dubai and more) and my commitment to the UMPC platform remains steadfast. In the last 12 months alone I have been invited to speak to Heads of Major Banks, International Guests, Major Blue-chip Organisations in Mining and Medical...and much, much more. I have travelled with over 20 UMPC as hand luggage almost monthly on interstate trips and all of this to grow awareness in Australia and New Zealand; interestingly my regime looks to have no slow in pace in sight!

My latest toy is the OQO e2 64GB SSD with HSDPA and outdoor optimised display; and I must admit that it has made me the happiest Geek in the Southern Hemisphere.

I have read all your comments and in saying that would once again thank you; keep them coming as they do make a difference. SO while you wait for my next comment or video why not reflect on videos of the recent past. Talk soon!

LatteGuy Fenech and iPad journeys continue

What started out as an effort to satisfy some friends has quickly turned into a whos who of Australian media! First my mate Jon Dee - runner up Australian of the Year 2010 (also Planet Ark fame and Do Something!) wanted an iPad and then Stephen Fenech (of the Fenech Family fame) and Editor of The Daily Telegraphs Connect column wanted one too.

Jon Dee and Stephen Fenech enjoy the iPads

I spent the late afternoon sipping tea and talking Tablets with these two gentlemen on Monday afternoon and by the end of it felt better about the IT space. Ironically not because they had converted me to a devoted iPad lover but because of the sense of commitment and passion around Tablet seemed somewhat escalated this year.

As we were spearheaded by Jon regarding the App Store, and his latest arrays of expenditures, I understood just how significant Tablets are to mobility becoming an accepted form of computing. With both PC and Apple Tablets there is a sense of freedom, a sense of accomplishment and a sense of empowerment which comes with being able to compute on the road and on the go. I remember my first exposure to Tablet PC and how it revolutionised the way I worked; it seems the “Minority Report” dreams of mobile computing are no longer a dream at all and rapidly becoming a reality.

What I am excited about most is how Apple’s iPad has pushed mainstream PC manufacturers like Dell and HP to look for ways to compete and therefore offer more compelling mobile computing solutions which will include things like proper multi-tasking, full uncompromised Operating Systems and ports! HAHA! I am looking forward to Apple’s touch experience being more common place on PCs and things battery life increases too. Overall Tablets I a good place this year!

Presenting at Sydney Mobile User Group

In other news, last week I presented at the Sydney Mobile User Group (#SYDMO). It was hosted at the City Hotel and ended up being a great night. I took the TEGA Tablet and the iPad and had fun showcasing it to the many folks at the event. I met @TheLatteGuy who then invited me to do a similar presentation on Wednesday (21st April) at #wscm, 54 Norton St Leichhardt. So if you’re in Sydney and want to hang out and Talk Tablets! Pop in for coffee between 8am and 10am.

eo gets 3G GPRS via Bluetooth

The last few days have been an absolute marathon. Not matter how "household" we believe the terms "Bluetooth" and "3G" to be it seems that getting the pair to talk is not that easy, especially when you throw-in an eo and the Motorola A1000. As I hang up the phone with my sixth Support-Staff member he whispers to me: "so how did you get it to work?" Little did I know, three days ago, that this simple task would turn into a revolution in computing terms?

Ill post a video soon but here is what Ive done:
  • Motorola A1000 phone talks to eo UMPC via Bluetooth, connects to 3G pipe via Three Mobile.
  • Sony Ericson T610 talks to eo UMPC via Bluetooth, connects to GPRS pipe via Vodafone Network.
  • BlackBerry 7290 talks to eo UMPC via USB cable and BlackBerry Desktop Manager Version 4.0.0.30, connects to GPRS pipe via Vodafone.

I cant wait to tell you all about it. Hopefully this little task can serve as reference to you all soon.

Carrypad does Pepperpad

Chippy has once again performed as expected - outstandingly. this time reviewing the Pepperpad device, unique in may ways, he has submitted thought and image that should keep you entertained for hours - or at least 10 minutes anyway.

The review starts with this comment "The Pepperpad 3 is your Google-life companion!" and ends there too "The Pepperpad is an absolute pleasure to use as a sofa or bed surfing device. As a Google-life pad it works wonderfully and if this style of thin and web-based computing takes off,"

I always appreciate the efforts Chippy goes to so if you get a moment head on over a have a looksy! Here are some of the thoughts I liked:

Real-World performance.
In the world of browsing the web and listening to music you dont really need much in terms of performance. Because there is no heavy weight graphical windowing system, all the applications start and run just as fast as you might expect them. If the Pepperpad has many applications open, you do start to see some slowing down but this is rare.

Heat and noise.
This section is easy. No noise and only a little warming after extended use. (Watching a video for example.) Very very nice.

Security
Security is minimal on the Pepperpad because from a network point of view there is nothing to attack. Attacks through http pages should be very minimal and so I dont regard the lack of firewall or anti-virus solution as a risk.

Pepper support and community.
Heres an area the Pepper seem to have a good handle on. Their support process is very easy and pro-active. If you have a problem, you can submit a report via the Pepperpad itself or via a telephone hotline. Engineers and product managers always seem to be around in the Pepper forum too. Not only that but there are plenty of other users in the forum that are happy to help.

Notion Ink Adam Problems Whats Really Going On

The tech industry has never been an easy one to get into. There are high barriers of entry in funding, ideas, and distribution, and then there are the pundits. Every product created gets dissected, analysed, and reviewed over and over again, sometimes to the joy of a new company and sometimes to its downfall.

So, it’s always interesting and occasionally painful to watch someone attempt a feat like Notion Ink – the India based tablet manufacturer who burst onto the scene at CES last January with a whole lot of promises in their Adam tablet.

Yet, even before their first tablet, the Adam, hits store shelves, Notion Ink is having a horrific time with their presale. Visitors to their site are finding limited information about the tablet, high shipping fees (or low depending on where you live), limited payment method options, requests for personal data they should never need, hiccups with shipping addresses, and a very short return window. Some are yelling “Scam” while others are simply waiting to see the device in question.

The tablet itself has not been shown outside of very limited tech demos that don’t showcase many of its announced features and as a result is severely lacking in the kind of hands-on buzz needed to alleviate these growing pains. Of course, Notion Ink has promised a reveal on January 6th at CES, but why then are they preselling so early if no one has actually used the device, and in some cases regulatory approval hasn’t even been acquired.

We don’t know for a fact if this is a case of an unscrupulous company or a very messy preorder process gone horribly awry, but the whole debacle got me thinking about the barrier to entry in this industry. Right now, there are roughly two dozen companies attempting to follow the path that Apple blazed last spring with major tablet launches. Some of them will succeed and many will not. But, most of them are major tech companies with diverse product offerings that can afford to test a new niche.

However, in my eyes, the really good ideas tend to come from the smaller manufacturers – the guys with something to prove and creativity to spare. If you want to succeed out of nowhere, you need to bring something over the top and brand new with you, not just another iPad or Tab replicate. So, I get excited when companies like Notion Ink come along. And a lot of people are with me on this. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean those companies will follow through with good devices, or even with a functional device.

I’m willing to wait out the preorder problems and accusations to see what the actual device looks like, though I do recommend you hold off on ordering until these issues are worked out. However you look at it, though, small manufacturers bring big ideas to this industry and as a tech enthusiast, I want to see each of them succeed.

If this is just a case of poor planning and Notion Ink bit off a little more than they can chew with a global launch on their first product, I will keep an eye on this thing in January because you never know when the little guy will come through with something impressive. If, on the other hand the Adam is DOA or simply never arrives, it will be a blow for small manufacturers everywhere who work hard to gain the public’s trust with their first product. Let’s hope it’s the latter.

Uncle Doug Mulray takes the Tablet!

There are certain good fortunes that cross our path when we focus our energy with ‘Definiteness of Purpose’– a term coined by motivational guru Napoleon Hill. One of the pleasures of my commitment to The Tablet PC in Australia and New Zealand has been the friendships attained by applying my enthusiasm and energy to my ‘Definiteness of Purpose’ - September 2005 was one very occasion (the date I first met the infamous Doug Mulray).

There are few devices that take a perfectly normal human being and turn them into a blubbering idiot (namely me); Tablet PC is one device that carries this ability. The following is an Interview conducted on 22 February 2006 at the private home of Radio Personality, Television Personality and straight shooter Doug Mulray. Even with all the weight that his namesake carries, Doug Mulray has given this interview and all the answers herein as an unsolicited and uncompensated gift to Tablet PC - “I’m a bit of a Disciple myself!” Doug Mulray openly preaches.

Doug Mulray takes the Tablet! Sahara Slate PC

"A Tablet Worth Taking," The Age Newpaper.

About Doug Mulray:

Uncle Doug, Doctor Dougie, or the Reverend Doctor Doug: no matter how you know him in Australia, the man is a multi-media legend. Having wedged his persona into our car stereo, as host of the breakfast time slot on Sydney FM radio station 2MMM (Triple M) in the 1980s, Uncle Doug Mulray is the unsung hero of internet innovation in Australia. His instigation of the internet based radio station Live at The Basement is an indication of just how “ahead of his time” he has been – the most prominent commercialized webcast Radio Station in Australia. For all you Uber Geeks that do not know of this man, our Uncle Doug has been brokering deals for downloadable media, and Internet based Radio Stations, since the late 1980’s.

Surrounded by gadgetry in the luxury of his home it’s not half obvious that Doug Mulray is a techno-geek. He’s not only early-adopted, but moreover he’s early-applied lots of the technology the mainstream still sees as cutting edge. As surprising as it may sound however, and by his own admission, Doug Mulray is a techno-phoebe; an almost unbelievable thought when you consider his past efforts.

Either he is really short, or Im really tall!

[Uncle Doug, youre the most genuine personality someone could hope to bump into.]

Aussie Tableteers have a yarn

Whenever Dr. Neil Roodyn is in your country you just know that some good stuff is gonna happen. On this occasion Neil and I both got together for some geekish fooling around that included rebuilding his PC and mud wrestling between the Raon Digital Vega and the Samsung Q1. Not only did we have fun and games but we actually got some work done too - oh, and Dr. Neils Notes number 20 went live on the day also.

If youre interested have a listen in here. It was actually recorded live on a Samsung Q1, edited on a Samsung Q1 and uploaded via Samsung Q1. Kind of ironic given that all we talked about was the...Samsung Q1.

Nice to be appreciated!

Recently GottabeMobile’s Rob Bushway posted a letter of thanks from new Tablet PC owner Mark de Jeu. Amongst the various insights Mark offered he also managed to name the resources that helped him narrow down his choices.

Until now. After months of daily reviews of GBM, JKOTR, WickedStage, Uber, and Buzz forums, I have landed on the Fujitsu P1510D. I heard your comments on trying out the ink, and I did try it out. No issues, and it may be that there will be a behaviour modification requirement for those that want non-Herculean touch screens (just as there is a behaviour modification requirement to become proficient in inking legible characters).

I just wanted to say to Mark: “You’re welcome mate!” Im really glad I could help.

The P1510 is an awesome machine; if you’re interested in the device why not look at Rob’s Video Review of the P1510.

Kohjinsha SA1 UMPC First impressions

My English speaking mate, Chippy, who resides in Germany, has got a first look at the 7" Convertible notebook named Kohjinsha! What I found fun to watch about this video was the shear excitement coming from Chippy as he glanced into the box and spotted the new device staring back at him.

Grab some popcorn and watch less than 10 minutes of one grown man acting like one very excited little child...

For me the device lacks much appeal given that Origami and therefore touch/pen features are a very obvious omissions! It looks slick and seems to run well but I would not know where to put it amongst all my toys equipment. I think the P1610 would be a better buy but I guess you should read Chippys review to find out more if you are interested in such a beast.

When three devices are not enough

Geekish smiles over free WiFi and a couple of Tablets!

Coming back from Europe was a little sad. We had such a great time that the journey back was filled with ambiguous feelings. Ironically, and to seemingly make it worse still, we ended up having cancelled flights and extended transits. The first hiccup was in Vienna where we had a cancelled flight on the way to Dubai. The flight was cancelled as we were boarding the plane and came after 180 minutes of delays. Luckily in my bag I had three Tablets, i.e. the Toshiba R400, the OQO 02, and the Samsung Q1U.

As I looked around the terminal earlier that evening there were many faces now starting to look familiar. These were the burdened faces of passengers on our same flight; all gloomy with the look of boredom and disappointment. Amongst this group I ended up pumping into an Indian Businessman from Madras who was having issues with his Dell. Interestingly he was a Mobility Expert who was focused purely on phones and PDAs so when I offered him the Q1U to check his emails (to kill his woes) the look on his face was priceless.

The first look was one of inquisitiveness; the second was one of excitement, and the last look was one of relief that such a device existed. We ended up sharing stories and chatting for well over 90 minutes. The only interruption to our geekish bliss was the fact that my son, Leon, wanted the Q1U back!!!! HAHAHA.

Finding Room in the Tech Market for Tablets

This morning as I was reading through a handful of my favourite blogs, I came across a number of new stories discussing how the tablet market is cutting into other long established markets. We’ve already discussed a few times the claim by some executives that the iPad is cutting severely into netbook sales, but this is not the only cannibalization in the technology race according to more than a couple analysts.

What interests me most about the growing argument over consumer focus and the effect it has on existing industries is that this is not a rare event. Whenever new technology becomes available, there is inevitably a shift in consumer spending. Most people don’t need a netbook and a tablet. They don’t need cable TV, Netflix, and a Hulu powered device. That’s not to say that some won’t have those devices, but for the most part, many people will stick with what works best in their day to day life.

It’s happened before. New technologies frequently supplant old ones. If you visit your local electronics store, you’ll surely find far more laptop computers on display than desktops. That’s not to say that desktops do not sell, but laptops are used in almost every facet of society – from education to enterprise and beyond while desktops are generally used at home and in the office. When laptops became more powerful and affordable they cut into that market sharply.

The same is now happening with the iPad and soon other devices of the same style and form. These devices are new and consumers do not yet know how they will use them, but we can be sure that many daily activities will be moved to the mobile space, simply because it is more convenient. Already, mobile smartphones are becoming a replacement for many tools such as phone books, maps, and portable gaming devices. So too will tablets gouge out their own space.

There are a few things that I find especially interesting in this new technology push, however. For sure, the demise of netbooks has been prematurely proclaimed. Just look at the sharp push of Macbook Air sales since the newest model was announced or Dell’s soon to be released Inspiron Duo – a hybrid of the tablet/netbook aesthetics. If a netbook can offer superior performance and a sleek design to rival a tablet, it will still sell.

But, on the other side of things, there are more technologies than just computing that will take a hit thanks to tablets. What about books? Or toys for children who are becoming increasingly tech savvy at very young ages? What about entertainment systems for the car? Who will need to spend thousands of dollars for a backseat DVD system when a single tablet with a Disney movie downloaded to it could easily do the same job.

This is an exciting time. All around us, people are innovating and developing new ways for mobile technology to take over certain tasks we perform using existing tools. That shift is only going to intensify as this technology matures – and while some people will be very nervous, I will be watching closely because there are so many avenues yet to be explored. It might harm one industry, but it will definitely provide value to the consumers driving these changes.

Australia 2006 and Tablet PC is OK!

Tonight I chatted with Lora Heiny of Microsoft (and the infamous What Is New blog). She is so passionate about the Tablet, which is not half obvious since she basically owns the Tablet space in the USA. Lora works with the Microsoft Mobile Platforms Division, Tablet PC ISV team as a vendor. Her focus is on Tablet PC ISV Partner relationships. Microsoft! Wheres our Lora in Australia?

While we inked she sent me a photo of Tablet Guy running around San Francisco. He was spotted with some sea-lions, and a silly grin!!

See Loras other photos of travelling Tablet Guy…

The irony of blogging is that Lora never met Hugo and Hugo never met Lora. I know Frank Arrigo knows Lora, but never met, except through Blogland – yet we all ink to each other with a sense of familiarity. As I told Lora of my conversation’s with Frank we came to one conclusion: “Tablet PC in Australia was going to be OK in 2006!!”

Watch this space Australia; we might get more guest appearances by Tablet Guy come MEDC time downunder.

As part of today’s activities I interviewed the Senior Vice President of Hannover Fairs Worldwide; I told him that Tablet PC was my favorite productivity tool in the hope that he might admit to owning one too! He didn’t. But it was fun to shove the question in there. LOL.

I hope you enjoyed the CeBIT Blog and I promise that the UberTablet Blog will return to normal broadcasting right after I catch up with some sleep. I gave the role my absolute all, even though it was unpaid and under resourced, in the hope of giving you a different look at CeBIT affairs.

Raon Digital anounces the EVERUN UMPC

There surely is one massive advantage to living in Australia, i.e. the time difference. We are one of the first nations to see the sun and one of the first to see the moon too. On this occasion the orientation of the Globe has allowed me to scoop a bit of news regarding Korean based manufacturer, Raon Digital.

Raon Digital rose to fame by launching the Vega UPPC (Ultra Portable PC) in mid 2006. While not officially a UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) the Vega still ticked a lot of boxes for users, i.e. resistive touchscreen, full Windows XP Operating System, 7 hr battery life and more. Where it fell dramatically short was its lack of inbuilt Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and its poor array of input methods, namely no keyboard.

On this occasion it seems as though Raon Digital has heard many of the requests made by first generation owners of UMPC and UPPC as they have gone back the drawing board with their latest release. So it is with great pleasure that I can provide specifications and pictures of the new Raon Digital entrant, dubbed the EVERUN! (Cool name)

· 4.8 Wide VGA 800 x 480 resolution / Touch screen / Auto rotation & brightness control

· AMD 600MHz Geode LX900 Processor or 500MHz LX800

· Microsoft Windows XP Home

· Various storage options including a 60G / 30G HDD and/or 6G SSD

· Integrated full QWERTY keypad

· Integrated 802.11b/g WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0

· Integrated HSDPA with Data & Voice or WiMAX (optional)

· Over 7 hours of real battery life with the standard battery (Max 12 hours with large battery)

· Easy to hold or pocket (170(W) x 83(H) x 25(D)mm) 460-500g (with standard battery.

I’ve heard that the initial release will be targeted at the Korean market (obviously) in the middle of July with overseas markets to follow shortly after. I for one think this looks awesome. I still remember unboxing the Vega and just loving the screen quality and overall size and functionality of that device. The EVERUN looks far superior and will be worth a look at by any discerning buyer. The great news about Raon Digital is that often their devices are priced rather aggressively in the UMPC/UPPC market...so heres hoping.

Here is what the Raon Digital VP said:

“More information is available at our home page www.raondigital.com and also from the attached file. This new model will be available for delivery middle of July and the retail price will be fixed soon. You can see the actual working model at Computex (June 5~9, Taiwan) at AMD Booth (HALL 4, booth #TF1I+T105)

I hope you like this machine and do not hesitate to contact me for any question.”

Play Nintendo 64 on your UMPC

One of my readers, Sean Tan, recently got himself a TabletKiosk EO V7110. So here’s the first thing he did with it…he installed a Nintendo 64 emulator on the machine and played some games!

He has even posted a video of it (albeit without music - comeon Sean!)

I thought it would interest some of you to know how he did this as you might have a cupboard full of old games you might want to dust off! Here is a copy of Seans email dated 12th April 2007:

Hi Hugo,

I made a video of my eo v7110. Its of me playing the Nintendo 64 game Super Smash Bros using an emulator on the eo. I thought that this may be of interest to some people. It showcases the portable gaming aspect of UMPCs, as I know one of the criticisms of UMPCs is the lack of gaming ability.I chose to make a video like this since most people choose to review the features of the eo v7110 without showing its potential for some fun.

I thought you may want to add it to your blog. Here it is: video

I upgraded my RAM to 1GB today, however, with 512MB the game runs just as fast.Just to let you and your readers know, the emulator (http://www.pj64-emu.com/) runs faster when the AC power is connected. To get the emulator to run at max speed when on a battery, I had to install RightMark CPU Clock Utility (thanks to Ctitanic).

I couldnt get the emulator to run at fast speeds without using RM CPU Clock Utility. You can run the game in fullscreen, which makes the eo look like one large Game Boy, however, it slows it down a bit.

Here are the steps to make the emulator run faster when powered by a battery. You dont have to do this if connected to AC.
  1. Start RightMark CPU Clock Uility
  2. Set Windows Power Scheme to RMClock Power Management
  3. Set RM Clock to Maximal Performance

I then had to configure the emulator to use the PageUp and PageDown keys as controls in the game (ie. Button A and B).

The directional pad on the left of the eo v7110 is already set as default in the game. The middle button is set as Enter.

Its not hard to work out.Of course, the eo v7110 is lacking the buttons to use all of the controls in the game. However, even with just the use of two buttons and the directional pad, the game is still very much playable and fun.

And, thats it! Happy gaming!

[Update 16th April 2007: BTW, I worked out that you dont need to install RightMark CPU Clock Utility to make the eo run at full speed. Just change the normal power profile to Home or Laptop.]

Gmail is integrated into apple iphone iOS 5, you can sync the calendar as well, and Google maps are a de-facto part of the OS (minus voice navigation.) You can download Google apps from the App Store, too. The Google Voice app has a better layout for iOS, compared with android smartphone but it's also slower and much less stable.

aplle iphone iOS 5 photo: Here's one of those places where it's hard to separate the software from the hardware because iOS 5 has great software image rendering, but photo quality also requires the image sensor and camera lens. The app itself lets you switch between the camera and camcorder modes, and between the front and rear cameras. You can adjust the flash level and turn on a grid or HDR mode, but that's about it. In the camera roll, you can create a slideshow, plus crop, rotate, remove red-eye, and auto-enhance , but from the looks of it Ice Cream Sandwich will have more features. We'll know more about those and their quality soon.

aplle iphone iOS 5 is not open source: iOS is a famously closed ecosystem, and whether you love it or hate it is a matter of personal opinion. There's also something to be said for uniformity in terms of your expectations of how a phone will behave, and in offering consistent customer support.

iphone had simple user interface. believe me that you can use iphone event that is the first time you hold an iphone.
